The Wildcats (8-5, 1-0 WAC) put the leadoff man aboard in four of the first five innings. In the first, senior
Kevin Stevens (2-1) responded by striking out the side and retiring six in a row. In the third, Stevens followed with two strikeouts, the second of which was the start of a strike 'em out, throw 'em out double play.
In the fourth, the Wildcats opened the inning with three-straight singles, taking advantage of a wild pitch to score one run and a
Miller Ladusau groundout to score another.
Bryson Hill led off the fifth with a home run to put the Wildcats up 3-0.
That was it against Stevens, who struck out nine in 5.1 innings. Junior
Diego Escobedo followed by striking out four in 2.2 innings of scoreless relief.
The Vaqueros (9-5, 0-1 WAC) threatened to score multiple times, including in the fifth, when they put two on with one out. That's when
Max Huffling (1-0) came in out of the bullpen, striking out seven in 3.2 innings of relief for the win.
The one run against Huffling came in the eight when graduate student
Cameron Blake hit a pinch-hit home run, his first with UTRGV.
The Vaqueros now have four pinch-hit home runs this season.
Tanner Riley pitched a scoreless ninth for his first save.
