STEPHENVILLE – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros baseball team fell to the Tarleton State University Texans 6-2 in the opener of a three-game series on Friday at the Tarleton Baseball Complex.
Down 6-0 entering in the ninth, graduate students
Freddy Rojas Jr. and
Brett Cain walked ahead of a single by graduate student
Cameron Blake to load the bases with nobody out. Sophomore PSJA alum
Jacob Sanchez came up with a pinch-hit, two run double to bring the tying run to the on-deck circle.
The Texans (5-12, 1-3), however, brought in
Matthew Hickey who retired the next three batters for his second save.
Graduate student
Bryan Sturges led the Vaqueros (11-7, 2-2) offensively by posting his first three-hit game of the season, the eighth of his career, going 3-for-4.
All three hits came against
Luke Baley (1-1), who scattered five hits and two walks while striking out three in 6.0 scoreless innings.
The Texans scored against senior
Kevin Stevens (2-2) in the second on a
Taylor Daniell sacrifice fly and the sixth on a
Jaime Perez single.
Stevens struck out five while allowing seven hits and one walk in 6.0 innings.
The Texans added four runs in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by
Corey Young, a two-run double by
London Green, and an RBI-double by
Spencer Bloom.
Bloom finished 3-for-4. Perez and
Alec Williams each went 2-for-4.
