STEPHENVILLE – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros baseball team dropped the finale of a three-game series to the Tarleton State University Texans 13-3 in eight innings on Sunday at the Tarleton Baseball Complex.
Junior
Jesus Aldaz (1-2) led the Vaqueros (11-9, 2-4) by racking up a career-high 11 strikeouts in a career-high 6.0 innings.
The first three runs for the Texans (7-12, 3-3) came on solo home runs, one by
Corey Young in the second, one by
Colby Seltzer in the fourth, and one by
Carter Dobrinski in the sixth. The other run came after Seltzer's home run in the fourth, as Young hit a fly ball to center that wasn't caught and flew all the way around the bases to score on an error.
The Vaqueros tied the game at 1 in the top of the fourth on a home run by junior
Brandon Pimentel, his eighth of the season. It was one of two home runs for the Vaqueros, as graduate student
Freddy Rojas Jr. hit a solo shot, his third home run of the season, in the eighth.
Graduate student
Cameron Blake brought the Vaqueros within 3-2 in the fifth with a sacrifice fly. Blake finished a career-high tying 3-for-3, marking his first multi-hit game of the season and the second three-hit game of his career.
That was it against
Bryce Hackett (1-3), who scattered five hits and two walks while striking out four in 5.0 innings.
The Texans broke the game open in the seventh by scoring seven runs. With the bases loaded and nobody out,
Dylan Kurahashi-Choy Foo was plunked to force-in a run and then
London Green hit an RBI-single. Two outs later,
Cody Vannoy hit a grand slam. Young followed with a double and
Bryan Aguilar singled him in to cap the inning.
Young finished 2-for-3 with three runs scored. Green also went 2-for-3.
The Texans ended the game in the eighth when Kurahashi-Choy Foo hit a walk-off, two-run home run to invoke the 10-run rule.
