RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros baseball team dropped the finale of a four-game series to the Youngstown State University Penguins 3-2 on Sunday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
Junior
Brandon Pimentel led the Vaqueros (8-4) by blasting a solo home run to left in the first inning and then drawing intentional walks in each of his next two at-bats. At that point, Pimentel had homered in three of his previous six at-bats and reached base in eight-straight plate appearances.
The Penguins (3-8) took the lead on a two-run single by
Dylan Swarmer in the second, but graduate student
Bryan Sturges answered with an RBI-single in the third to tie the game at 2.
That's where the score stayed until the ninth, as four UTRGV relievers combined for 5.0 scoreless innings. In his debut, sophomore
Justin Butz pitched 2.0 scoreless innings. Senior
Ricky Gerik Jr. followed with a perfect frame. Sophomore
Zach Tjelmeland pitched a hitless inning and then graduate student
Max Balderrama Jr. struck out two in a perfect eighth.
In the ninth, though,
Andre Good hit a leadoff home run against junior
Jesus Aldaz (0-1) to give the Penguins the lead.
That made a winner of
Casey Marshalwitz (1-0), who recorded the final out of the eighth.
Nathan Ball pitched a scoreless ninth for his third save.
