Baseball Earns Series Victory at Abilene Christian

ABILENE – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros baseball team beat the Abilene Christian University Wildcats 7-5 in game two of a doubleheader on Saturday at Crutcher Scott Field to both clinch the series by taking two out of three and the season series by taking four out of six.

The Vaqueros (23-16, 9-9 WAC) scored four runs in the sixth to come back from a 2-0 deficit. Graduate student Jacob Hirsh led off the inning with a single and then freshman Vela alum Isaac Lopez hit an RBI-double. Graduate student Cameron Blake followed with a four-pitch walk before junior Diego Ramirez belted a three-run home run, his second of the season and of the week, to put the Vaqueros up 4-2.

The Wildcats (19-20, 8-10 WAC) tied the game in the bottom of the inning on a Brett Hammit two-run home run.

The Vaqueros regained the lead in the seventh on an RBI-single by junior Chris Mondesi.

The Wildcats came right back to tie the game at 5 in the bottom of the inning on a Tanner Tweedt RBI-double.

That was it until the ninth. Graduate student Freddy Rojas Jr. led off with a double against Tanner Riley (2-3). Sophomore PSJA alum Jacob Sanchez laid down a sacrifice bunt, but the throw to first got away, allowing pinch-runner and sophomore Spencer Serven to score. After another sacrifice bunt, Mondesi hit an RBI-single to put the Vaqueros up 7-5.

That made a winner of senior Ricky Gerik Jr. (3-3), who pitched 2.2 innings of scoreless relief, striking out two.

Offensively, Mondesi went a career-best 3-for-5 with two RBI. Lopez went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Hirsh went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Junior Brandon Pimentel went 2-for-5. Rojas finished 2-for-4 with a walk. Blake reached base three times, doubling, and drawing two walks. Ramirez reached twice, adding a walk to his home run.

The Wildcats initially got on the board in the third on a Colton Eager home run.

Then, in the fourth, Alexei Cazarin hit a two-out RBI-single to make the score 2-0.
