CORPUS CHRISTI – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros baseball team fell to the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders 12-5 as part of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, on Wednesday at Chapman Field.
Graduate student
Brett Cain led the Vaqueros (23-18) offensively by going 2-for-4 with a home run and a walk. Junior
Chris Mondesi went 2-for-3 with a double, a walk and a run scored.
Down 3-0 in the fourth, the Vaqueros put runners on the corners with one out. Cain took off from first on a ball in the dirt. The throw came through, allowing junior
Brandon Pimentel to take off from third and score the Vaqueros' first run.
The Vaqueros tied the game in the sixth on a two-out, two-run single by graduate student
Cameron Blake.
Diego Johnson responded with an RBI-single in the bottom of the inning to put the Islanders (20-22) back on top before Cain hit his eighth home run of the season against
Clay Westbrook (3-1) to tie the game at 4 in the seventh.
The Islanders struck back in the bottom of the inning, loading the bases with nobody out against junior
Alex Verdugo(0-1) before plating runs on three wild pitches, a
Leo Markotic groundout, and a
Cole Modgling triple to take a 9-4 lead.
The Islanders added three runs in the eighth on a two-out triple by
Josh Caraway and a two-run double by
Max Puls.
The Vaqueros completed the scoring in the ninth on a sacrifice fly by graduate student
Bryan Sturges.
UTRGV opens a three-game series against Tarleton, presented by
First Community Bank, on Friday at 7 p.m. at UTRGV Baseball Stadium. This game is part of the Cane's Challenge.
