NACOGDOCHES – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros baseball team fell to the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks 9-4 on Friday at Jaycees Field.
The Vaqueros (31-23, 16-13 WAC) are now locked into the Southwest Division #3 seed in the Western Athletic Conference Tournament and will face West Division #2 seed Sacramento State in the opening round on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Hohokam Stadium, the spring training home of the Oakland A's, in Mesa, Ariz.
Three Vaqueros had multi-hit games, as postbaccalaureate student
Cameron Blake went 2-for-5 with a run scored. Junior
Brandon Pimentel went 2-for-5 with a run scored. Junior
Diego Ramirez finished 2-for-4.
The Vaqueros got off to a good start against
Joe Richter (3-4), as Blake and Pimentel led off with singles. One out later, graduate student
Brett Cain doubled them in. Then, with two outs, junior
Chris Mondesi singled to left to bring home Cain and make the score 3-0.
The Vaqueros scored once more against Richter on a solo home run by graduate student
Jacob Hirsh in the fourth, his third of the season, to pull the Vaqueros within 5-4.
Richter pitched 7.0 innings, allowing eight hits and one walk while striking out two.
After falling behind early, the 'Jacks (15-36, 8-21 WAC) got one run back immediately on a two-out single by
Peyton Parker against graduate student
Jesus Aldaz, who pitched one inning to get ready for next week's WAC Tournament.
Junior
Colten Davis (4-3) took over in the second and set down the first three batters he faced.
In the third, though, after the 'Jacks put two on with nobody out,
Scout Sanders,
Clayton Loranger and Parker all hit RBI-singles to make the score 5-3. Two runs scored on Loranger's single due to an error.
Sanders added a home run in the fifth,
Kyle Cullen hit a sacrifice fly in the sixth, and
Dillon Eatman hit a sacrifice fly while Parker scored on a wild pitch in the seventh to make the score 9-4.
