CORPUS CHRISTI – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros baseball team closed out non-conference play with an 18-3 loss to the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders on Wednesday at Chapman Field.
The Islanders (22-24) broke through with one out in the first when
Brendan Ryan walked, stole second and third and scored on an error.
Josh Caraway followed with a home run. After
Tre Jones knocked out sophomore
Angelo Cabral (1-1) with a triple,
Leo Markotic and
Max Puls hit back-to-back RBI-doubles. One out later,
Cole Modglinghit an RBI-single to cap the inning with the score 5-0.
The Vaqueros (27-19) answered in the top of the second on a three-run home run by freshman Vela alum
Isaac Lopez against
Cassius Shy (2-2). It was Lopez's second-straight at-bat with a three-run home run, after closing out Tuesday win over UTSA with a three-run blast. Lopez had never previously driven in three runs in a game and entered the week with just one home run.
The Islanders responded five runs in the bottom of the inning on an error, a wild pitch, RBI-singles by
Tucker McEnroe, Modgling, and
Nate White, and a two-run single by
Steven Rivera-Chijin to make the score 12-3.
The Islanders added a run on a two-out error in the third to take a 13-3 lead.
White hit a two-run home run and Markotic added a two-run single in the fourth to make the score 17-3.
The Islanders tacked on one more run in the sixth on a Puls sacrifice fly.
