BEAUMONT – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros baseball team fell to the Lamar Cardinals 5-2 on Saturday at Vincent-Beck Stadium.
The Vaqueros (28-20, 13-10 WAC) are now one game back of the Cardinals (29-18, 14-9 WAC) for second place in the Western Athletic Conference Southwest Division standings.
Graduate student
Jesus Aldaz (5-4) allowed three hits in the first inning, but thanks in-part to a double play, didn't allow anything across.
Aldaz allowed just four more hits over the next 5.1 innings and didn't allow a run until the sixth when
Chase Kemp hit a two-out solo home run.
Matthew McDonald opened the seventh with a solo home run. Then, with two outs in the inning,
Ethan Ruiz hit a two-run home run to make the score 5-2.
Aldaz struck out three without walking anybody while allowing three runs on seven hits in a career-high 6.1 innings.
The Vaqueros scored their runs in the fifth against
Adam Wheaton (8-2). Graduate student
Brett Cain led off with a triple. One out later, junior
Diego Ramirez hit an RBI-single, stole second and advanced to third on an error. That set up a sacrifice fly by freshman Vela alum
Isaac Lopez to make the score 2-0.
Cain went 3-for-4 with a double, a triple and a run scored. Ramirez finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
Wheaton allowed six hits without a walk while striking out five in 7.1 innings.
Jack Dallas recorded the final four outs for his 10
th save.
