RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's soccer team earned its first victory of the season by beating the Texas Southern University Tigers 3-0 on Friday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
After scoring two goals in the first 48 matches of her career, senior
Ana Recarte-Pacheco scored a career-high two goals, including her second-career game-winner.
Recarte-Pacheco gave the Vaqueros (1-4-0) a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute on a give and go from sophomore
Amy Hislop.
Then, in the 30
th minute, freshman
Alaina Granger sent a corner kick into the box.
Libby Beilfuss redirected the ball to Recarte-Pacheco in front of the goal who sent a grounder into the back of the net to make the score 2-0.
Junior
Elina Seppälä followed with a penalty kick goal in the 39
th minute to put the Vaqueros up 3-0.
Freshman
Emma Lööv (1-2-0) played the first 84 minutes in net, making one save to combine with sophomore Brownsville Veterans Memorial alum
Karime Benavides for the shutout.
Jaidyn Christophe (0-3-0) made three saves for the Tigers (0-3-0).
The Vaqueros outshot the Tigers 17-2, including 6-1 on goal.
The Vaqueros play their next four matches on the road starting Sunday at 7 p.m. at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi as part of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, on
ESPN+.
