SEATTLE, Wash. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's soccer team fell 2-1 to the Seattle U Redhawks on Friday at Championship Field in their Western Athletic Conference opener.
The Redhawks (2-5-1, 1-0-0 WAC) got the scoring started early in the first half. Jesse Ortiz connected with Yeider Zuluaga in the 13
th minute and found the back of the goal for the 1-0 lead.
The Vaqueros (2-4-2, 0-1-0 WAC) answered back in the 20
th minute when junior
Raul Carrillo picked up a deflected pass and curved into the top left corner of the net tying the match at 1-1.
In the second half, the Vaqueros put the pressure on the Redhawks but couldn't get the go-ahead goal. The Redhawks took the lead in the 69
th minute when Ortiz took a pass from Nico Wiskel and put it over UTRGV goalie
Alexis Gonzalez for game-winner.
The Vaqueros outshot the Redhawks nine to seven but were outshot on goal three to 1.
Gonzalez (1-1-1) made one save in the match.
The Vaqueros will be back in action on Sunday, October 2, when they visit San Jose State at 2:30 p.m. at Spartan Soccer Complex.
