BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's cross country team finished 33
rd and the women's team was 40
th at the Arturo Barrios Invitational at the Watts Cross Country Course on Friday, with three personal records set by each team.
Both squads were defeated by their counterparts from rival Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, falling in the South Texas Showdown presented by Rally Credit Union. The Islanders picked up six points and now trail UTRGV 11.5 to 7.5.
Senior
Alex Munoz led the men's team with a 71
st place finish in 24:29.3 in the 8K race. Senior
Ricardo Garcia finished 131
st in 24:52.9, a new personal record. Junior Rio Grande City alum
Alex Canales was 266
th in 26:07.4, freshman
Mario Cantarero ran a new personal record to finish 318
th in 26:58.8, and freshman McAllen Rowe alum
Kevin Cardenas was 336
th in 27:24.4 to round out the scoring. Freshman McAllen Memorial alum
Diego De Leon took 344
th and freshman Mission Veterans Memorial alum
Manuel Flores was 346
th with a new personal record.
Tulane won the men's team title, followed by Indiana and Incarnate Word. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi finished 23
rdwith 578 points and UTRGV was 33
rd with 910 points. Thirty-nine teams and over 350 runners competed in the men's race.
Junior
Samantha Gonzalez was the top women's finisher for the second consecutive meet, placing 260
th in 22:42.8 in the 6K race. Sophomore PSJA High alum
Faith Cruz was 277
th in a new personal record time of 22:53.7. Junior Sharyland High alum
Ana Hernandez took 296
th in 23:11.4, senior Brownsville Porter alum
Estrella Medellin finished 315
th in 23:25.7 and freshman
Kailey Salazar was 330
th in a new personal record time of 23:39.0 to round out the scoring. Senior Santa Rosa alum
Desiree Guerra and sophomore Lasara alum
Selissa Gonzales finished 371
st and 374
th, respectively. Gonzales set a new personal record.
Utah Valley won the women's team title, followed by UCLA and Boston College. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi was 30
thwith 887 points and the Vaqueros finished 40
th with 1147 points. There were 41 women's teams and over 380 runners in the race.
Next up for the Vaqueros will be the Western Athletic Conference Championships on Oct. 27 in Abilene.
