RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's soccer team outpaced the San Jose State University (SJSU) Spartans winning 3-2 on Thursday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex in their season finale.
The Vaqueros (5-9-1, 2-5-2 WAC) started the game aggressively as they created multiple opportunities early in the game. The Vaqueros capitalized by scoring the first goal of the game when graduate student
Bryant Farkarlun scored from the left side of the box with a shot that went to the top right corner of the net to make it 1-0.
Graduate student goalkeeper and Brownsville native
Garret Wild had one save denying a nice opportunity by Spartans junior Isaac Lomeli. Vaqueros outshot the Spartans (6-7-4, 3-4-1 WAC) 8 to 2 and 5 to 1 on goal in the first half.
The second half saw an offensive back and forth battle as the Vaqueros were the first to strike when Farkarlun deked around the defender inside the box and launched a shot into the top right corner of the goal just six minutes into the half to make it 2-0.
In the 74th minute, the Spartans scored their first goal when sophomore Angel Iniguez netted one into the bottom right of the goal that cut into the lead to make it 2-1.
Thirty seconds later, sophomore
Kgodiso Sukati answered right back and scored on a penalty kick when the Spartans committed a handball in the box which extended the UTRGV lead to 3-1.
Less than a minute later, Iniguez struck from the middle third with a hard hit ball into the top right corner of the goal that made it 3-2.
The rest of the match had lots of energy and ball movement as the Vaqueros denied the Spartans the ability to find the equalizer.
The Vaqueros outshot the Spartans 14 to 9 and 7 to 3 on goal.
Wild finished the match with one save.
