CORPUS CHRISTI – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's tennis team was defeated 6-1 by the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (TAMUCC) Islanders on Saturday in Corpus in the South Texas Showdown presented by Rally Community Credit Union. 
 
TAMUCC (7-3) captured wins on the second and first doubles courts to secure the early 1-0 advantage. UTRGV (4-8) duo of senior Chris Lawrance and freshman Agustin Salazar picked up a 6-3 win at No. 3 
 
The Islanders went 5-1 in singles to clinch the match victory. 
 
Sophomore Borna Devald won his No. 2 match over Pascal Lorieul, coming back from a 4-6 first set loss to take the next two 7-6, 1-0. Junior Emilien Burnel and sophomore Sam Whitehead battled in the No. 1 and No. 4 flights, respectively. 
 
UTRGV returns home to the Orville Cox Tennis Center for its next two matches. The Vaqueros will host BYU on Friday at 1 p.m. and TAMUCC on March 5 at 3 p.m. in the South Texas Showdown rematch.
