SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's tennis team was defeated 6-1 by the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors on Saturday at UC San Diego's Northview Tennis Courts. 
 
Hawaii (6-3-1) claimed the doubles point with wins on the second and third courts. UTRGV's (5-10) No. 1 duo of junior Emilien Burnel and sophomore Borna Devald won its third straight match in the top flight, fighting back from an early deficit to force a tiebreaker and take the win, 7-6 (7-3). 
 
The Rainbow Warriors extended their lead to 3-0 with straight-set singles wins on the first and third courts by Andre Ilagan and Guillaume Tattevin, respectively. Kilian Maitre clinched the match victory for Hawaii with a win in the No. 6 flight, holding off a comeback attempt from senior Chris Lawrance who fought after dropping the first set to push Maitre in the second before falling 6-2, 7-5. 
 
Devald picked up a well-earned, gritty 7-6 (9-7) first set win in his No. 2 match against Axel Labrunie. Labrunie forced a third set 10-point tiebreaker by taking the second set 6-1. Labrunie held on to win the match by taking the tiebreaker 10-6. 
 
Sophomore Sam Whitehead and senior Te Kani Williams showed good fight in their No. 4 and No. 5 matches, respectively. After both Vaqueros dropped their first sets 6-3, they both came back to force third sets as Whitehead won his second 6-4 and Williams took his second 6-2. 
 
Whitehead put the Vaqueros on the board with a solid win, taking the third 6-4. Williams fell 6-3 in his third. 
 
UTRGV plays Nevada at 1 p.m. (CT) Sunday back at the Northview Tennis Courts.
