RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros baseball team fell to the Sam Houston Bearkats 11-2 to conclude a three-game series on Sunday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
The Vaqueros (9-10, 1-5 WAC) scored their run in the third against
Gavi Coldiron (1-0), as with one out, senior
Zerek Saenz drew a seven-pitch walk and sophomore Vela alum
Isaac Lopez doubled to setup an RBI-ground out by graduate student
Brandon Pimentel to make the score 3-1.
Pimentel reached base twice on walks. Sophomore
Steven Lancia reached a team-best three times, going 2-for-3 with a double and a walk.
Lancia's double came with one out in the ninth. Junior PSJA alum
Jacob Sanchez followed with an RBI-double to complete the scoring.
The Bearkats (13-8, 6-0 WAC) got on the board against graduate student
Colten Davis (2-2) in the first, putting runners at second and third with nobody out ahead of a two-run double by
Walker Janek. After a sacrifice bunt,
Justin Wishkoski hit an RBI-single to make the score 3-0.
The Bearkats put up another three-spot in the fourth on an RBI-double by
Myles Jefferson and a two-run single by
Tyler Davis.
The Bearkats scored twice more in the fifth on an RBI-single by
Easton Loyd and a sacrifice fly by Jefferson and twice more in the sixth on an RBI-double by
Joe Redfield and an RBI-groundout by
Clayton Chadwick.
Graduate student
Kris Massey pitched a hitless seventh inning, striking out two, and then junior Vela alum
Nico Rodriguez pitched a hitless eighth.
In the ninth, however, the Bearkats added a run on a Jefferson RBI-single.
UTRGV hosts UTSA on $2 Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at UTRGV Baseball Stadium. General admission tickets and select concession items are available for $2 or less. The first 500 fans in attendance receive UTRGV football t-shirts. Tickets are on sale now at
