WACO – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's tennis team dropped its final non-conference match 4-0 to the #47 Baylor Bears at the Hurd Tennis Center Saturday.
Baylor (13-11) took the 1-0 lead with doubles wins on the second and third courts. UTRGV's No. 1 duo of junior
Emilien Burnel and sophomore
Borna Devald jumped out to a 3-0 lead in their match against Baylor's #11 nationally ranked duo of
Tadeas Paroulek/Zsombor Velcz. Burnel/Devald patrolled the net and executed smart shots to go toe-to-toe with the Bears, but the match went unfinished tied at 4-4 when the doubles point was secured.
The Bears clinched the match with singles wins on the fifth, first and sixth courts by
Christopher Frantzen, #94 Paroulek and
Justin Braverman.
Devald stayed tight in his No. 2 match, pushing the first set until
Marko Miladinovic won it 7-5 and competing to a 2-2 tie in the second before the bout went unfinished. Sophomore
Karlo Krolo dropped the first set of his No. 3 match 2-6 then bounced back well in the second, which was tied 5-5 when the match was called.
UTRGV (5-13) opens Western Athletic Conference (WAC) play Sunday at 10 a.m. at UT Arlington.
