OREM, Utah – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros baseball team saw its six-game Western Athletic Conference (WAC) winning streak snapped with an 11-2 loss to the Utah Valley University Wolverines on Saturday at UCCU Ballpark.
Junior
Kade York led the Vaqueros (19-14, 7-7 WAC) offensively by going a career-high tying 3-for-4 with a career-high two doubles and one run scored. Graduate student
Montclair Cain went 2-for-4 with a career-high tying two doubles and an RBI. Sophomore
Steven Lancia finished a career-high tying 2-for-4.
The Vaqueros got on the board right away, as with one out in the first, sophomore Vela alum
Isaac Lopez walked and graduate student
Brandon Pimentel singled. One out later, Cain doubled down the right field line to bring home Lopez and make the score 1-0.
The Wolverines (18-16, 5-7 WAC) got that run back in the bottom of the inning against junior
Angelo Cabral (6-1), as with two on and one out,
Matthew Schwarz hit an RBI-single.
The Wolverines scored three runs in the second on a
Cole Jordan home run, a
Patrick Mills RBI-single, and a wild pitch that scored
Luke Iverson.
Jordan hit a 2-run home run in the third to put the Wolverines up 6-1.
The Wolverines added two more in the fourth on a Schwarz RBI-double and a
Burke Camper sacrifice fly.
The Vaqueros got one back against
Ethan Fowlks (1-2) in the seventh. York led off with a double, move to third on a fly out and scored on a Lopez single to make the score 8-2.
Graduate student and McAllen alum
Abanny Garcia pitched a career-high 4.0 scoreless innings of relief, allowing just two hits while striking out one.
The Wolverines completed the scoring in the eighth on a solo home run by
Garrett Broussard and a 2-run home run by Schwarz.
UTRGV and Utah Valley conclude this 3-game series on Sunday at 1 p.m. Fans can watch domestically on
