PHOENIZ, Ariz. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's tennis team lost its Western Athletic Conference (WAC) finale 5-2 Sunday to the Grand Canyon (GCU) Lopes.
UTRGV (6-17, 1-4 WAC) won the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead. GCU (6-12, 2-3 WAC) took the first doubles match, winning at No. 3, then UTRGV's top duo of junior
Emilien Burnel and sophomore
Borna Devald evened the session with a good 6-2 win at No. 1.
Senior
Te Kani Williams and sophomore
Karlo Krolo clinched the doubles point after a battle at No. 2. The match was a back-and-forth fight, and when the pressure was on, Williams/Krolo held off GCU's comeback attempt to take the win.
GCU took the first two singles matches as
Alfred Almasi won at No. 3 due to retirement and
Martim Marujo won at No. 2, making the score 2-1 Lopes. Senior
Chris Lawrance tied it up by controlling his No. 6 match to win 6-2, 6-4.
The Lopes secured the victory as
William Alsterback and
Paolo Rosati recorded three-set wins on the fifth and fourth courts, respectively.
Jonathan Da Silva won in three at No. 1 despite a solid effort from Burnel.
The Vaqueros will play their regular season finale Tuesday at #42 UTSA at 11 a.m.
