ARLINGTON – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's tennis team dropped its Western Athletic Conference (WAC) opening match 6-1 to the UT Arlington (UTA) Mavericks Sunday at the UTA Tennis Center. 
 
The Mavericks (10-7, 1-0 WAC) swept the doubles matches to open up a 1-0 lead. UTRGV (5-14, 0-1 WAC) freshman McAllen Memorial alum Agustin Salazar started his first conference campaign well with a solid 6-4, 6-2 win in the No. 5 flight to even the score at 1-1. 
 
UTA secured the victory with singles wins by Lachlan Robertson, Anton Shepp and Dante Carlos Teramo in the fourth, first and sixth spots. 
 
Despite good fight from sophomores Borna Devald and Karlo Krolo in the second and third flights, respectively, the Mavericks closed the match with straight-set wins on both courts. Senior Chris Lawrance was competitive in the second set of his No. 6 match, pushing it to a tiebreaker, but Teramo held off to clinch the win. 
 
The Vaqueros will be back at the Orville Cox Tennis Center to host a pair of conference matches Thursday at 1 p.m. against New Mexico State and Saturday at 10 a.m. against Abilene Christian.
