RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros baseball team beat the Abilene Christian University (ACU) Wildcats, a team receiving votes in the latest National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association poll, 8-4 in game one of a doubleheader on Saturday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
Game two is scheduled to get underway at approximately 6:45 p.m. Fans can watch domestically on
ESPN+ and internationally via
WAC International.
Junior
Angelo Cabral (7-1) started and pitched 5.0 scoreless innings, striking out seven while scattering two hits and two walks.
The Vaqueros (21-16, 8-9 WAC) broke through against
Breck Eichelberger (4-2) in the third by putting runners on the corners with two outs to set up an RBI-single by graduate student
Brandon Pimentel.
Then, with two outs in the fourth, junior
Adrian Torres drew a four-pitch walk before sophomore
Steven Lancia and junior
Kade York hit consecutive singles to put the Vaqueros up 2-0.
Pimentel led off the fifth with a single and stole second before scoring on a one-out single by graduate student
Montclair Cain to make the score 3-0.
The Wildcats (25-13, 10-7 WAC) got one back in the top of the sixth on a two-out home run by
Grayson Tatrow, but the Vaqueros scored twice in the bottom of the inning, first on York's second home run of the season and then on an error that scored senior
Zerek Saenz to make the score 5-1.
The Vaqueros put two on with one out in the seventh, setting up a Saenz RBI-single. During the next at-bat, Saenz stole second. The throw went into center field, at which point York took off from third to score to make the score 7-1.
Logan Britt homered for the Wildcats in the top of the eighth, but junior PSJA alum
Jacob Sanchez answered with a home run of his own in the bottom of the inning to make the score 8-2. Sanchez now has four home runs this season.
Saenz reached base five times, going 3-for-3 with a walk, a hit by pitch, an RBI and a run scored. York finished a career-high tying 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Pimentel went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Lancia finished 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored.
The Wildcats added two more runs in the ninth on a
Tanner Tweedt solo home run and a
Garrett Williams single.
