ARLINGTON – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros baseball team fell to the UT Arlington Mavericks 12-5 on Friday at Clay Gould Ball Park.
The Mavericks (22-19, 12-7 WAC) put up a six-spot against graduate student
Jesus Aldaz (3-3) in the second on a
Steven Saunders home run, a
Matt Cavanagh single, a
Garrison Berkley 2-run single, and a
Ryan Black 2-run single.
The Vaqueros (23-17, 9-10 WAC) got half of those runs back against
Gabe Starks (5-0) in the top of the third on a 2-run single by graduate student
Brandon Pimentel and a sacrifice fly by graduate student
Montclair Cain.
Pimentel went 2-for-5 with two RBI one run scored to extend his hitting streak to 18 games, during which time he's hitting .444 (36-for-81) with 33 RBI and 23 runs scored.
In the bottom of the third, though,
Tyson Pointer led off with a home run. Later in the inning,
Tyler Rice hit an RBI-single and Berkley added a sacrifice fly to make the score 9-3
Black hit a sacrifice fly in the sixth to make the score 10-3.
In the seventh, senior
Zerek Saenz hit a 2-run double to bring the Vaqueros within 10-5.
Saenz went 2-for-5 with two RBI and one run scored. Junior
Adrian Torres finished 2-for-4 with a run scored.
The Mavericks got those runs back in the bottom of the seventh on a 2-run single by Rice.
UTRGV and UT Arlington play game two of this three-game series on Saturday at 2 p.m. Fans can watch domestically on
