BEAUMONT – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros baseball team dropped its non-conference finale, 10-4 to the Lamar University Cardinals on Tuesday at Vincent-Beck Stadium.
The first three Vaqueros (26-24), senior
Zerek Saenz, sophomore Vela alum
Isaac Lopez, and graduate student
Brandon Pimentel, hit singles, the last of which drove-in a run to make the score 1-0.
That was it for the Vaqueros until the eighth, when with one out, Saenz walked and Lopez singled, setting up an RBI-single by Pimentel. One out later, graduate student
Montclair Cain hit a 2-run double to make the score 10-4.
Pimentel finished 3-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored. Lopez went 2-for-4 with one run scored. Saenz finished 1-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored. Junior
Kade York went 2-for-4.
The Cardinals (29-21) broke through in the third when
Monray Van Der Walt hit an RBI-double and
Kevin Bermudez hit a 2-run home run against sophomore
Randy Garza (2-3) to make the score 3-1.
That made a winner of
Quinn Waterhouse (2-1), who pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.
The Cardinals added a run in the fourth on a two-out
Kirkland Banks RBI-single, making the score 4-1.
Josh Blankenship homered in the sixth to put the Cardinals up 5-1.
In the seventh, the Cardinals loaded the bases with nobody out, setting up a 2-run double by
Ryan Snell, an
Ethan Ruiz sacrifice fly, a
Kanin Dodge RBI-double, and a
Peyton Sanderson RBI-double to make the score 10-1.
Senior
J.C. Ariza started and struck out one in 2.0 scoreless innings.
Graduate student
Kris Massey struck out two in a perfect fifth.
Graduate student McAllen alum
Abanny Garcia struck out two to get the final two outs of the seventh and then sophomore
Bobby Loya struck out the side in a perfect eighth.
UTRGV closes out Western Athletic Conference (WAC) play with a 3-game series at Stephen F. Austin starting Thursday at 6:30 p.m. The team that wins the series advances to the WAC Tournament. Fans can watch domestically on
ESPN+ or internationally via
WAC International.
