FORT WORTH – Junior PSJA North alum
Damian Rodriguez hit his first Division I home run as The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros baseball team fell to the TCU Horned Frogs 14-4 in seven innings on Tuesday at Lupton Field.
Rodriguez posted his first multi-hit game, going 2-for-2 with a walk, an RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base. Senior
Zerek Saenz also had a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with a double and a walk.
Rodriguez got the Vaqueros (24-19) on the board in the fourth. He hit a 1-out single and junior
Adrian Torres hit a 2-out, moving Rodriguez to third. A wild pitch brought home Rodriguez to make the score 9-1.
Jax Traeger (1-0) came in and got sophomore
Erick Martinez to fly out to end the inning.
Rodriguez hit a solo home run to start the sixth. The next three batters reached, setting up a Martinez sacrifice fly and an RBI-single by junior
Kade York to make the score 12-4.
Graduate student
Kris Massey (1-1) started and plunked the first batter he faced. He then walked the next three to force-in a run. Senior
J.C. Ariza came in, and on his first pitch, got
Cole Fontenelle to ground into a double play as a run scored.
Kurtis Byrne followed with an RBI-single to put the Horned Frogs (25-20) up 3-0.
In the second, with two on and two out,
Anthony Silva hit an RBI-single. After a walk loaded the bases, Byrne was plunked to force-in a run and
Austin Davis walked to bring home another run.
Logan Maxwell capped the inning with a bases-clearing double to make the score 9-0.
Maxwell hit a 2-run home run in the bottom of the fourth to make the score 11-1.
Byrne hit a 2-out RBI-double in the fifth to make the score 12-1.
Byrne ended the game with a walk-off, 2-run home run in seventh.
UTRGV opens a 3-game series at Sacramento State Friday at 8 p.m. Fans can watch domestically on
ESPN+ or internationally via
WAC International.
