SAN ANTONIO – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's soccer team picked up their first win of the season by defeating the University of the Incarnate Word Cardinals 3-0 on Thursday at Gayle and Tom Benson Stadium.
The Vaqueros (1-2) put the pressure on the Cardinals (1-1-1) in the first half as they put up six shots with five on goal and eight corners.
UTRGV got on the board in the 27
th minute when graduate student
Reda Ikarrain was fouled in the box and earned a penalty kick for UTRGV. Sophomore
Kgodiso Sukati converted the kick for his first goal of the season giving UTRGV the 1-0 lead.
The Vaqueros continued their dominance in the second half as the offensive pressure forced another foul in the box setting up a penalty kick in the 69
th minute as junior
Tinashe Simbo converted for his first goal of the season making it 2-0.
UTRGV put the finishing touches on the scoring when the defense created a turnover and freshman
Jaime Carrillo run up the field and snuck a shot past Cardinals goalkeeper Alejandro De La Torre for his first-career goal to make it 3-0.

Alexis Gonzalez kept the Cardinals off the board by making three saves on the night and directed a defense that allowed just four shots on goal.
The Vaqueros outshot the Cardinals 15 to 6.
The Vaqueros will be back in action on Monday when they host the Texas A&M-San Antonio at 6:30 p.m. at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex in their home opener.
