SAN ANTONIO – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros cross country teams competed at the UIW Invitational Saturday at the Windcrest Golf Club with the men's team finishing fifth and the women's team taking eighth.
UTRGV's men's team tallied 155 points, coming in behind Incarnate Word (23 points), Trinity (94), Texas State (132) and Houston Christian (154). The Vaqueros beat UTSA, Texas A&M International, Our Lady of the Lake, El Paso Community College, the secondary team from UIW and Texas A&M-Kingsville.
Senior
Ricardo Garcia and junior Rio Grande City alum
Alex Canales each earned top-20 finishes. Garcia was 14
thafter getting a good jump at the starting line and running the 8K race in 25:22.6, and Canales took 18
th in a personal record time of 25:35.1. Senior

th in 26:02.8, followed by sophomore
Abraham Morales (26:39.6) in 48
th and freshman
Mario Cantarero (27:22.7) in 64

The women's team accumulated 208 points, beating Our Lady of the Lake (214), El Paso CC (250) and Texas A&M International (263). UTRGV finished behind Rice (47), Trinity (106), UTSA (114), Texas A&M-Kingsville (124), Texas State (127), Houston Christian (133) and Incarnate Word (144).
Junior
Samantha Gonzalez paced the Vaqueros with a 23
rd place finish in 23:13.9 in the 6K race. Sophomore PSJA High alum
Faith Cruz followed in 23:40.2 to take 34

UTRGV's final non-conference meet will be Oct. 13 in College Station at the Arturo Barrios Invitational. The meet will count toward the South Texas Showdown, presented by Rally Credit Union, as UTRGV and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi will both be competing in what is usually a well-attended and highly competitive meet.
