OMAHA, Neb. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's soccer team fell 1-0 to the Omaha Mavericks on Saturday at Caniglia Field to close out their non-conference schedule.
The Vaqueros (3-4) and the Mavericks (3-3-1) battled through the first 70 minutes of the match as the match remained scoreless.
The Mavericks broke the scoreless drought in the 72
nd minute Junior Casillas took the pass from Mathis St. Louis and snuck in the goal by UTRGV goalkeeper
Alexis Gonzalez.
The Vaqueros had an opportunity late in the match as a shot from freshman
Keaviano Francis was on goal, but Omaha goalkeeper Nathanael Sallah made the save to preserve the score.
Gonzalez finished the night with five saves while Sallah also finished with five saves.
UTRGV was outshot 15 to 5 and 6 to 5 on goal.
The Vaqueros will be back in action on Sept. 28 when they open Western Athletic Conference play against UNLV at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex at 6:30 p.m.
