NACOGDOCHES – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros volleyball team fell to the Stephen F. Austin 'Jacks 0-3 (10-25, 18-25, 15-25) on Saturday at Shelton Gym.
Freshman
Nadine Zech led the Vaqueros (7-8, 1-1 WAC) with 11 kills, three digs and an ace. Junior
Luanna Emiliano dished out 22 assists with eight digs, four kills and an ace. Junior
Ilana De Assis posted eight kills. Junior
Perris Key recorded four kills and nine digs. Junior
Kiaraliz Perez posted 11 digs and two assists.
Ielan Bradley led the 'Jacks (12-3, 1-0 WAC) with 15 kills on .520 hitting and five blocks.
Tanishua Joseph posted seven kills and four blocks.
After dropping the first set, the Vaqueros off to a strong start in set two, going up 5-3. After the 'Jacks took the next two points, a pair of Zech kills put the Vaqueros up 7-5 and 8-6. After the 'Jacks won the next three serves, a Zech kill tied the set at 9. The Vaqueros were within one at 11-12 on a Key kill before a 6-2 run put the 'Jacks up 18-13. A pair of errors brought the Vaqueros within three, but the 'Jacks scored six of the next seven points to pull away.
Zech and senior
Luisa Silva Dos Santos had early kills as the third set was tied at 5. The 'Jacks scored five in a row to take the lead before Emiliano came up with two kills and two assists to power a 7-2 run to bring the Vaqueros even at 12 apiece. One serve later, an Assis kill tied the set at 13, but the 'Jacks scored the next five points as part of an 11-1 run to push the set out of reach.
The Vaqueros host Southern Utah on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at the UTRGV Fieldhouse. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased at
