OREM, Utah – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's basketball team fell to the Utah Valley University Wolverines 75-62 on Saturday at the UCCU Center.
Junior
Arianna Sturdivant led the Vaqueros (2-13, 1-5 WAC) with 18 points. Sophomore
Charlotte O'Keefe scored 14 points with 13 rebounds and a career high-tying three steals. Senior
Mele Kailahi scored 11 points with six rebounds and two steals. Freshman
Jayda Holiman scored 11 points with four rebounds.
Tessa Chaney led the Wolverines (6-9, 1-5 WAC) with 18 points and 11 rebounds.
Kylee Mabry scored 17 points, four rebounds and two steals.
Eleyana Tafisi scored 15 points with six rebounds.
Sturdivant hit a 3-pointer in the opening seconds to give the Vaqueros the immediate lead before the Wolverines went on an 8-0 run.
The Wolverines pushed their lead to eight at 15-7 in the opening seconds of the first quarter. The Vaqueros responded with an 8-2 run, capped by a Holiman 3, to pull within 17-15, but the Wolverines responded with a 16-4 run to close out the half and go up 33-19.
The Wolverines scored the first two points of the third quarter to extend their lead to 35-19. The Wolverines still led by 16 at 40-24 when Kailahi hit a 3 and O'Keefe sunk a pair of free throws to make the score 40-29.
The Wolverines scored the next five points to go back up by 16 before a Sturdivant 3 sparked an 8-2 run to bring the Vaqueros within 47-37.
After the Wolverines scored five in a row, Sturdivant, Kailahi and Holiman all hit 3-pointers to power a 9-4 run to bring the Vaqueros within 56-46 at the end of the third. Holiman's shot came from beyond the half court line to beat the buzzer at the end of the quarter.
The Wolverines used a pair of 3-pointers to go back up by 16 at the start of the fourth before junior
Iyana Dorsey made a deep 3 to spark a 10-2 run to bring the Vaqueros within 64-56.
The Vaqueros were still within eight on a Holiman layup that made the score 66-58 with 3:44 remaining, but that's as close as they got.
UTRGV hosts UT Arlington on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at the UTRGV Fieldhouse for back to school night. The first 300 UTRGV students in attendance receive free food. The game also features the Cane's Challenge. If the Vaqueros win, all fans in the fieldhouse will receive coupons for buy one, get one free box combos at Raising Cane's on their way out.
