STILLWATER, Okla. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's tennis team dropped its Sunday match against the Omaha Mavericks, 5-2, at the Greenwood Tennis Center.
The Mavericks (1-1) took a 1-0 lead in the match after winning on all three doubles courts. Omaha secured the victory with straight-set singles wins on the fifth, first, third and fourth courts.
Freshman
Ivo Isqueiro and sophomore McAllen Memorial alum
Agustin Salazar competed well after dropping the first sets of their No. 2 and No. 6 matches, respectively, to get UTRGV (0-2) on the board.
Isqueiro was added to the singles lineup following the conclusion of doubles, and after falling 6-2 in the first set to
Mikel Garmendia, he displayed gritty tennis to knot up the match with a 7-6 (7:4) second set win. Isqueiro kept his momentum rolling in the 10-point tiebreaker, jumping out to a 7:2 advantage and securing his first win of the season, 10:7.
Salazar bounced back to battle for a 7-5 second-set win in his No. 2 match against
Mikhail Korkunov. He played a full third and showcased his agility to take control late and earn his first singles win of the spring, 6-4.
Freshman
Santiago Serrano gave his opponent everything he could handle in the first set of the No. 3 match before falling 7-6 (7:3), 6-2.
The Vaqueros (0-2) will host Lamar at 10 a.m. Friday in the home opener at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
