RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's basketball team fell to the California Baptist University Lancers 63-54 on Thursday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse in front of a crowd of 1,932.
Freshman
J.J. Howard led the Vaqueros (6-14, 2-7 WAC) with a career-high 18 points and four rebounds. Senior
Daylen Williams scored 14 points with six rebounds. Freshman
C.J. Booker scored 10 points with four rebounds and two assists. Junior
Sherman Brashear scored nine points while hitting three 3-pointers.
Hunter Goodrick led the Lancers (12-7, 5-3 WAC) with 14 points and 12 rebounds.
Brantly Stevenson scored 11 points with four rebounds.
Yvan Ouedraogo scored 10 points with nine rebounds.
Kendal Coleman scored 10 points with eight rebounds.
Dominique Daniels Jr. scored nine points with five assists.
The Lancers jumped out to a 9-0 lead before Brashear nailed a 3 and Booker followed with two 3-pointers of his own to power an 11-5 run and bring the Vaqueros within 14-11.
The Lancers responded with an 11-4 run to push their lead to 25-15.
A pair of Brashear 3-pointers brought the Vaqueros to within five at 26-21. The Lancers followed with a 7-2 run to restore their 10-point lead before a Williams turnaround jumper at the buzzer made the score 33-25 at the half.
Howard opened the second half with a jumper before the Lancers went on 12-2 run to take a 45-29 lead.
The Vaqueros answered by scoring the next seven points as part of a 12-3 run, capped by a Howard 3-point play, to pull within 48-41. The Lancers followed with a 12-4 run to push their lead to 60-45.
Howard followed with two free throws and a 3-pointer and then Williams made four-straight free throws to bring the Vaqueros within 60-54 with 1:29 remaining, but that's as close as they got.
UTRGV visits Utah Tech on Feb. 1 at 8 p.m. Fans can watch domestically on
