WACO – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's tennis team battled during Day Two of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Texas Regional Friday at the Hurd Tennis Center, picking up a pair of wins. 
 
The Vaqueros competed hard in the opening round of doubles action to start the day, but all three teams fell in the round of 64. The duo of sophomore Paolo Bonaguro and freshman Loic Young Kriegel and the team of redshirt junior Sam Whitehead and sophomore Ivo Isqueiro kept things tight, falling 8-4 in their contests against pairs from Abilene Christian and UT Arlington, respectively. 
 
Young and Whitehead drew opponents from Baylor, which was the No. 40 ranked team at the conclusion of the 2024 spring season, in main draw singles action. After winning his way into the main draw with a 2-0 run in the qualifying bracket Thursday, Whitehead got a tough matchup in the No. 4 seeded Zsombor Velcz, who took a 6-2, 6-1 win. Young faced Luc Koenig and fell 6-0, 6-4.   
 
Three Vaqueros picked up extra matches. Freshman Eduardo Menezes defeated Lamar's Jonah Smith 6-2, 6-1. Sophomore Santiago Serrano earned a come-from-behind, 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10:6) against Abilene Christian's Benjamin McDonald. 
 
Young and Whitehead will play consolation singles matches Saturday starting at 10:30 a.m. 
 
UTRGV will be back in action Oct. 25-27 at the first Southland Conference Fall Championship in Hammond, Louisiana.
