RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's basketball team tied the program scoring record and broke the program record for margin of victory in a 110-37 over the Arlington Baptist University Patriots in the home opener on Saturday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
The Vaqueros (2-3) scored 110 points for the second time in program history after having previously doing so against Schreiner on Nov. 21, 2006.
The Vaqueros won by 73 points, breaking the previous margin of victory record of 64 points set against Schreiner in a 93-29 win on Dec. 30, 2001.
All 14 active Vaqueros played and scored, led by graduate student
Chynell Mitchell, who scored a career-high 17 points with a career-high 11 rebounds, a career-high four steals, and a career-high three blocks for her first-career double-double. Junior
Charlotte O'Keefe posted her second-straight double-double with 16 points, 13 rebounds, two blocks, and two steals. Freshman
Elizabeth Romer scored a career-high 16 points. Freshman
Kayla Lorenz scored a career-high 12 points with a career-high four rebounds.
Ariella Goren led the Patriots with seven points, five rebounds and three assists.
The Vaqueros scored the first 18 points of the game while hitting seven of their first eight shots. Holiman opened the game with a layup and a 3-pointer and was one of six Vaqueros to score during the run. Freshman
Elizabeth Romercapped the stretch with a 3-point play at the 5:07 mark.
Up 26-6 late in the first quarter, a Lorenz 3-pointer sparked a 23-0 run during which eight Vaqueros scored to make the score 49-6 midway through the second quarter.
The Vaqueros pushed their lead to 61-14 at halftime on a last second 3-pointer by sophomore
Madison Huhn.
The Vaqueros' lead was 73-23 late in the third quarter when a tip-in by senior Edinburg alum
Brianna Sanchez kicked off a 28-0 run to make the score 101-23 midway through the fourth.
Sanchez finished with a career-high eight points, a career-high eight rebounds, and a career-high two blocks.
The Vaqueros continue this 8-game homestand on Monday at 4 p.m. when they host St. Mary's in the first game of a single-admission doubleheader with the men's basketball team, which hosts Le Moyne at 6:30 p.m., at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
The first 500 fans receive Vaqueros game day t-shirts. The first 300 UTRGV students receive free food.
