RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's soccer team battled to a scoreless draw with the San Jose State (SJSU) Spartans Saturday at the Spartan Soccer Complex in their season finale.
UTRGV (4-7-5, 2-3-4) started fast as they took the first four shots of the match with two on goal. The first scoring chance came in the 18
th minute as freshman
Abel Ador fired a shot that was wrangled in by SJSU (4-7-7, 3-3-3) keeper
Ronin Axelson.
SJSU had an opportunity in the 32
nd minute after a few deflections created an opening but sophomore goalkeeper
Fernando Carreon made the save.
The second half was played at a faster pace as both teams looked to take advantage in the match. UTRGV was the aggressor offensively early, taking a pair of shots in the first 10 minutes of the half delivered by sophomore
Jaime Carillo and junior
Kgodiso Sukati.
Within the span of two minutes, the Vaqueros created two more opportunities as senior
Jason Robles fired a shot aimed for the top of the net and then a turnover by the Spartans led to a shot by sophomore
Keaviano Francis that were both saved by Axelson.
When the Spartans were in possession, the Vaqueros swarmed to any threat that entered the box and only allowed one shot in the second half.
The Vaqueros outshot the Spartans 13-4 and 6-2 on goal.
Carreon ended the match with two saves.
