Men's Basketball Uses Three-ball to Hang Tough in Loss at Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's basketball team knocked down 13 three-pointers in an 87-67 loss to the University of Nebraska Huskers on Monday at Pinnacle Bank Arena.   
 
The Vaqueros (0-1) had four in double-digit scoring led by fifth year guard K.T. Raimey, who finished with 14 points on 5-of-13 shooting. Senior Cliff Davis finished the game with 12 points on four three-pointers. Sophomore Tommy Gankhuyag finished with 11 points with three three-pointers made. Graduate student DK Thorn finished also finished with 11 points while making a trio of three-pointers.  
 
Brice Williams the Huskers (1-0) with 27 points and five rebounds. Rollie Worster finished with 18 points and nine rebounds. Connor Essegian scored 12 points with four rebounds and Andrew Morgan added 10 points with five rebounds. 
 
The Huskers scored the first eight points, but the Vaqueros responsed with a pair of three-pointers from Gankhuyag and Davis to get within 8-6. After the Huskers pushed their lead to 14-6, redshirt junior Howie Fleming Jr. converted a three-point play and Raimey knocked down a three to cut Nebraska's lead to 14-12. 
 
The Vaqueros took their first lead of the night on a three-pointer from Davis with 10:07 left to play in the first half. Both teams went back-and-forth throughout rest of the half as there were a total of 10 lead changes, but the Huskers used another 6-0 run to take the 42-36 lead into half. 
 
The Vaqueros continued to use the three-ball to stay with the Huskers in the second half. Gankhuyag knocked down a pair to get UTRGV within 50-44 and then Thorn knocked down two more to make it 60-52 with 13:29 left to play. 
 
Later in the half, the Huskers pushed their lead to 65-52 with 11:52 to play, but the Vaqueros went on an 11-2 run that featured a couple of jumpers from Raimey, a layup from Abdul Hakim, a three-pointer from Davis, and was capped with a layup by Washington to UTRGV within four at 67-63. 
 
The Huskers countered with a run of their own as they closed out the game with a 20-4 run to put the game away. 
 
The Vaqueros will be back in action on Wednesday when they visit No. 15 Creighton at 8 p.m. The game against Creighton will be televised on FS1.
