RIO GRANDE VALLEY – Senior
Cliff Davis hit 14 3-pointers, the most in NCAA Division I in six years, a program record and a Southland Conference record, to lead The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's basketball team to a 106-56 victory over the College of Biblical Studies Ambassadors on Saturday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
The Vaqueros (8-4) finished with a program record 24 3-pointers, the most in NCAA Division I in three years, as the last team to hit more was Eastern Kentucky, who made 25 against Midway on Dec. 15, 2021.
Davis finished with 42 points, tied for the second-most in NCAA Division I this season. His 14 3-pointers are the most of any NCAA Division I player since November 15, 2018, when
Jordan Lyons of Furman hit 15 against North Greenville.
The previous program record for 3-pointers was 10 by
Antonio Green against Grambling State on Nov. 25, 2016. Davis' previous career-high was 10, set against Southern-New Orleans on Dec. 19, 2023.
Seven other Vaqueros contributed to the historic 3-point barrage, as graduate student
DK Thorn (10 points, career-high five assists), junior
Trey Miller (eight points, seven assists, two steals), and freshman
Jaylen Washington (career-high tying eight points, five assists), each hit two, while junior

Marquice Scott led the Ambassadors with 19 points and six rebounds.
The Vaqueros trailed 13-11 midway through the first half before scoring 17-straight points as part of a 28-4 run to take control of the game. During the run, the Vaqueros hit nine of their 16 shots, including 6-of-12 from behind the arc. Davis hit a trio of 3-pointers during the run.
