RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's basketball team fell to the Utah Tech Trailblazers 91-55 on Thursday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse in front of a thunderous crowd of 2,573 for Kids Day, presented by Whataburger.
Junior
Kade Hackerott led the Vaqueros (4-15, 3-7 WAC) with 10 points with nine rebounds and three assists. Sophomore
Charlotte O'Keefe scored 10 points with six rebounds. Junior
Tierra Trotter scored a career-high tying 10 points with three assists. Junior
Iyana Dorsey finished with eight points.
Macie Warren led the Trailblazers (12-9, 6-4 WAC) with 20 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Breaunna Gillen scored 19 points with six rebounds, four assists, and two steals.
Maddie Warren scored 16 points with six rebounds and four assists.
Maggie McCord scored 15 points with six rebounds and three assists.
The Vaqueros and Trailblazers traded baskets over the first five minutes. A layup by graduate student
Ashton McCorry put the Vaqueros up 12-11 before the Trailblazers answered with a 9-0 run to take the lead.
A pair of Dorsey free throws and O'Keefe 3-pointer sparked an 11-2 run to bring the Vaqueros within 23-22.
The Trailblazers pushed back with an 23-5 run, though, to go up 46-27.
Freshman
Jayda Holiman closed the second quarter with a layup, but the Trailblazers scored the first eight points of the third as part of a 21-5 run to push the game out of reach.
