Men’s Tennis Taking On SMU Friday

DALLAS – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's tennis team continues their five-week road streak Friday and heads to Dallas to take on the SMU Mustangs.

UTRGV (3-8) and SMU (6-3) will play at 11 a.m. at the Styslinger/Altec Tennis Complex. The Vaqueros are 1-17 all-time against the Mustangs in a series dating back to 1969. UTRGV's last win came in 1977. SMU earned a 6-1 win when these teams faced off last season, but senior Emilien Burnel captured a good three-set win in the No. 1 singles match.

Both teams have had a week off since their last matches. SMU comes in after defeating Rice 4-1. UTRGV dropped a pair of matches at Texas Tech last Friday but saw good fight across several courts.

Burnel defeated Jonas Gundacker 6-2, 6-4 in the No. 1 singles match of the second contest at Texas Tech. Freshman Ivo Isqueiro picked up a set competing at No. 4. UTRGV will be looking to snap a four-match losing skid Friday.

Through 11 matches, Burnel and sophomore McAllen Memorial alum Agustin Salazar lead UTRGV with 4-5 records playing in the No. 1 and No. 2 singles spots, respectively. With a young roster and some early injuries, the Vaqueros have mixed around the doubles pairs often, using 10 combinations already. They'll continue to make adjustments and execute game styles as they take on another tough competitor with the goal of challenging and improving themselves ahead of the conference season.
