RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros baseball team dropped the 2024 season to the University of Rhode Island (URI) Rams 4-3 in 11 innings in game one of a doubleheader on Sunday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
UTRGV and URI continue the doubleheader at approximately 4 p.m.
Senior
Angelo Cabral, an all-region honoree a year ago, picked up right where he left off, starting and striking out eight in 5.0 scoreless innings. He scattered three hits and one walk.
Connor Grotyohann held the Vaqueros (0-1) without a hit through the first four innings. In the fifth, however, graduate student
CJ Valdez led off with a single and junior
Steven Lancia doubled. Junior
Hank Warren and senior PSJA North alum
Damian Rodriguez followed with sacrifice flies to give the Vaqueros a 2-0 lead.
Lancia finished 2-for-5.
The Rams (1-0) broke through in the seventh on a leadoff home run by
Brody Levin to make the score 2-1.
The Vaqueros got that run back in the eighth when senior
Kade York hit a leadoff double and senior
Adrian Torresfollowed with an RBI-single.
Torres finished 2-for-4.
In the ninth, however,
Michael Anderson hit a 2-run home run to tie the game.
With one out in the 11
th,
Brody McKenzie hit a go-ahead single off junior
Aaron Sanchez (0-1).
Tommy Hughes (1-0) struck out three in 2.0 scoreless innings to end the game.
