SEATTLE, Wash. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's basketball team fell 84-56 to the Seattle U Redhawks Saturday in a Western Athletic Conference (WAC) game at the Redhawk Center.
Junior guard
Elijah Elliott paced UTRGV (6-21, 2-14 WAC) offensively with 23 points. Senior forward
Daylen Williams recorded his second consecutive double-double, scoring 14 points with a game-high 12 rebounds and a team-high three assists. Redshirt freshman guard
C.J. Booker added 10 points.
Seattle U (18-10, 11-6 WAC) was led offensively by 24 points from
John Christofilis and 21 points from
Cameron Tyson. Kobe Williamson had a team-high 11 rebounds.
UTRGV scored the first seven points of the contest as the defensive effort kept Seattle U quiet for nearly four minutes. Williams drove to the basket and went underneath for a layup, then an Elliott steal turned into a fastbreak layup for the guard.
Trailing 7-0, the Redhawks called a timeout, and out of the break they scored 12 unanswered to get in control after a slow start. But Elliott gave the edge right back to UTRGV, knocking down a pair of three-pointers to aid an 8-0 run to put the Vaqueros up, 15-12.
From there, the teams exchanged small runs and lead changes. A three-pointer from Booker and continued success from Williams in the paint had the Vaqueros leading 22-17 until Seattle U again knotted things up. Elliott drilled his third three-pointer of the half to end the small Redhawks run.
The Redhawks tried to close the half on a 7-0 run, but Booker saved a would-be turnover and made a one-footed jumper late in the frame. Seattle U held a slim 29-27 lead at halftime.
Seattle U scored the first six points of the second half of a pair of threes and got all the momentum on its side to open up a sizeable lead at 38-29. UTRGV slowed the roll a touch with a perfectly executed inbound play for a Booker layup, but the Redhawks remained in control.
Williams and Elliott kept the Vaqueros pushing even as the deficit grew. Elliott showed his shiftiness to get to the hoop, and Williams slammed down a dunk. But UTRGV struggled with a plethora of turnovers to keep their scoring chances limited.
UTRGV continued to play hard despite the deficit. Late in the game, sophomore forward
Saliou Seye snatched a steal and took the turnover quickly up the court for a dunk. Redshirt junior guard
Roy Jones III added a layup.
The Vaqueros will be back in action Thursday at (RV) Grand Canyon for an 8 p.m. WAC contest.
