KINGSVILLE – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's tennis team outdueled the NCAA Div. II 24
th-ranked Texas A&M-Kingsville (TAMUK) Javelinas Wednesday at the Javelina Tennis Courts, earning a solid 5-2 win.
UTRGV (5-3) picked up the doubles point for just the second time this season. Sophomores
Yaiza Vazquez and
Valentina Urraco earned a solid 6-4 win in the third doubles match. The No. 2 duo of senior
Lea Karren and junior
Kristal Dule secured the 1-0 lead with a 6-3 win.
Karren rolled in the No. 2 singles match, extending the Vaqueros lead to 2-0 with a swift 6-2, 6-4 win. TAMUK (4-1) got on the board with a straight-set win on the sixth court, but UTRGV got the point right back as Vazquez won her No. 5 match, 6-4, 6-4.
The Javelinas trimmed the lead to 3-2 with a win on the fourth court, where Dule was competitive but couldn't hold off the comeback from
Milou Ter Morsche.
Junior
Marjorie Souza and graduate student
Isabelle Bahr both dropped the first sets of their singles matches on the first and second courts, respectively, then battled back to win the second. With the team victory still up for grabs, both bouts played full decisive third sets.
Souza clinched UTRGV's victory at 4-2 with tough play on the top court. She fell behind early, losing the opener 6-1 to
Alessa Maier. But Souza's tenacity shined through as she ground out a 7-5 win in a back-and-forth second set. The junior powerhouse buckled in and played smart to give the Vaqueros the win with a 6-4 third set.
Bahr recovered nicely after a 6-2 loss in the first frame to
Luna Jokanovic to skillfully win the second, 6-3. She took control early in the third and held off a comeback attempt to secure her win with a 6-4 set.
UTRGV hosts Texas State Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Orville Cox Tennis Center. Admission is free and the community is encouraged to attend.
