PHOENIX – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's basketball team fell to the Grand Canyon Lopes 72-43 on Thursday at GCU Arena.
Junior
Elijah Elliott led the Vaqueros (6-22, 2-15 WAC) with 12 points with a career-high eight rebounds and two assists. Freshman
C.J. Booker scored 11 points. Senior
Daylen Williams scored nine points and six rebounds, two assists and two steals. Junior
Sherman Brashear finished with six points. Sophomore
Isaiah Barganier scored five points.
Tyon Grant-Foster led the Lopes (25-4, 15-3 WAC) with 21 points, six rebounds, four assists and three blocks.
Duke Brennan scored 10 points with seven rebounds.
Lok Wur scored 10 points with five rebounds.
Collin Moore scored eight points with seven rebounds, four assists and three steals.
The Lopes jumped out to a 17-5 lead over the first five and a half minutes. Williams answered by bookending a 12-0 lead with layups to tie the game at 17.
The Lopes hit the next two baskets, and then the Vaqueros and Lopes traded baskets for the rest of the half, as a Booker 3 and a jumper brought the Vaqueros within 21-20 and 23-22 and an Elliott jumper made the score 26-24.
The Lopes scored the final two points of the first half and the first nine points of the second half to go up 37-24.
Then, after a Brashear layup, the Lopes went on a 9-0 run to take a 46-26 lead and push the game out of reach.
UTRGV is back in action on Saturday at 7 p.m. at California Baptist. Fans can watch domestically on
