RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's basketball team fell to the Grand Canyon Lopes 66-40 on Thursday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
Junior
Kade Hackerott led the Vaqueros (6-20, 5-12 WAC) in scoring with 12 points, seven rebounds, and two steals. Sophomore
Charlotte O'Keefe finished with seven points, four rebounds, and two blocks. Senior
Zariah Sango finished with a career-high tying seven rebounds while adding three points and one block off the bench.
The Lopes (24-5, 16-2 WAC) had two players finish in double-figures as
Laura Erikstrup scored 22 points and
Sydney Erikstrup finished with 13 points and four steals.
The Lopes led 8-3 in the opening minutes run before graduate student
Ashton McCorry recorded a steal, leading to a 3-pointer by freshman
Taylor Meyners.
The Lopes pushed their lead to 15-8 before the Vaqueros shortened the gap with a 3-pointer by junior
Arianna Sturdivant and a turnaround jumper by Hackerott.
The Lopes opened the second quarter in a 10-0 run before the Vaqueros scored the final four points to pull within 31-19.
O'Keefe and junior
Tierra Trotter both had buckets inside the paint to keep pace with the Lopes to start the third. However, the Lopes ended the quarter on an 11-4 run to go up 48-28 and push the game out of reach.
UTRGV hosts California Baptist on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the UTRGV Fieldhouse. Fans are encouraged to come early to celebrate the graduating seniors in a special on-court ceremony before the game.
