CEDAR CITY, Utah – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's basketball team fell to the Southern Utah University Thunderbirds 79-59 on Saturday at America First Event Center.
Junior
Elijah Elliott led the Vaqueros (6-16, 2-9 WAC) with 18 points with two rebounds, one assist and one steal. Senior
Daylen Williams scored 11 points with six rebounds and one steal. Sophomore
Isaiah Barganier scored nine points with four rebounds. Junior
Sherman Brashear scored seven points with five rebounds and one steal.
Zion Young led the Thunderbirds (9-13, 4-7 WAC) with 20 points.
Parsa Fallah scored 17 points with five rebounds.
Dominique Ford and
Chazz Hutchison each scored nine points with eight rebounds.
The Thunderbirds jumped out to a 9-3 lead before the Vaqueros scored four of the next five points to pull within 10-7 on a Brashear layup.
The Vaqueros trailed 15-12 when Elliott hit three jumpers to bring the Vaqueros within one, including 15-14, 17-16, and 19-18.
The Vaqueros tied the game for the first time at 19 on a Seye free throw with 8:48 remaining in the first half. The Thunderbirds, however, responded with a 26-6 run to take a 45-25 lead.
The Thunderbirds led by as much as 30 at 64-34. The Vaqueros responded with an 18-4 run to pull within 68-52 with 5:29 remaining, but that's as close as they got.
UTRGV visits Stephen F. Austin on Thursday at 7 p.m. Fans can watch domestically on
