RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's tennis team got back in the win column Sunday with a 6-1 victory over the Morgan State Bears at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
UTRGV (6-6) picked up the doubles point with wins on the second and third courts. The duos shifted, and the team of graduate student
Isabelle Bahr and junior
Kristal Dule was sharp on Court Three, getting a quick 6-1 win. Junior
Marjorie Souza and sophomore
Valentina Urraco locked down the 1-0 lead with a 6-3 win at No. 2.
The Vaqueros rolled in singles. Urraco didn't give her opponent an inch in the No. 6 match as she earned a dominant 6-0, 6-0 win. Sophomore
Yaiza Vazquez and Dule picked up wins on the fourth and fifth courts, respectively, to lock up the team win. Vazquez won 6-3, 6-1 and Dule followed shortly after with a 6-2, 6-1 victory.
Souza captured a solid win at No. 1 to grow the lead to 5-0. She battled through a tight first set to win it, 7-5, then controlled the second to put the bout away with a 6-1 frame.
Bahr and senior
Lea Karren treated the Sunday crowd to competitive matches on the second and third courts, respectively. Karren dropped her first set 6-4 and bounced back to battle hard in a back-and-forth second, but
Lauryn Hall held on to put Morgan State (0-8) on the board at 5-1.
Bahr won the first set of her No. 2 match, 6-3, holding off a fiery opponent. The California native and Morgan State's
Hannah Smith put together long rallies and swapped scores, ties and lead changes through an exciting second set, pushing the frame to 6-6 and a tiebreaker for the win. Bahr opened up a 4-2 lead in the seven-point decider and never looked back, using a great mix of shots to secure her win 7-6 (7:3).
Up next for the Vaqueros is a 10 a.m. match Friday at the Orville Cox Tennis Center against North Dakota.
