RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros baseball team beat the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders 5-2 on Tuesday at Chapman Field as part of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Rally Credit Union.
On the first pitch of the game, senior
Kade York homered to give the Vaqueros (9-6) an immediate lead.
York finished 2-for-5.
In his first start, sophomore
Wyatt Wiatrek struck out six in 3.1 hitless innings before
Garrett Gruell tripled,
Josh Blount hit an RBI-single, and
Sebastian Trinidad hit an RBI-double to put the Islanders (9-10) up 2-1 in the fourth.
That was it until the eighth.
Kendall Dove (1-1) struck out the first two batters he faced before Senior
Adrian Torres hit a liner to left. Blount dove for the ball and missed it. As the ball rolled to the wall, Torres raced around the bases for an inside-the-park home run to tie the game. Junior Sharyland alum
Martin Vazquez followed with a single. During the next at-bat, senior
Jalen Freeman, pinch-running, advanced from first to third on a wild pitch. Graduate student
CJ Valdezreached on an error to bring home Freeman and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Junior Vela alum
Isaac Lopezsingled and stole second, setting up a 2-run single by junior
Steven Lancia to cap the inning with the Vaqueros up 5-2.
That made a winner of junior
Anthony Tejada (1-0), who struck out one in a perfect seventh.
Junior
Francisco Hernandez struck out one in a scoreless ninth for his second save.
UTRGV opens Western Athletic Conference play Friday at 6 p.m. with the first of three games at Seattle U. Fans can watch domestically on
