BELLEVUE, Wash. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros baseball team fell to the Seattle U Redhawks 6-4 on Saturday at Bannerwood Park.
Three Vaqueros (9-8, 0-2 WAC) had multi-hit games, led by graduate student
CJ Valdez, who went 2-for-4 with a 2-run home run. Junior Sharyland alum
Martin Vazquez went 2-for-4 with a solo home run. Senior
Kade York finished 2-for-5.
The Vaqueros were held to one hit over the first three innings. In the fourth, however, Vazquez hit a solo home run and Valdez hit a 2-run home run to put the Vaqueros up 3-2.
In the fifth, junior
Erick Martinez and Vazquez hit back-to-back 2-out singles. Junior
Hank Warren followed with a groundball in the shortstop hole. As the throw came to first, Martinez raced home from second to put the Vaqueros up 4-2.
Kellen Carr hit a 2-run home run in the fifth to tie the game at 4.
The Redhawks (6-11, 2-3 WAC) regained the lead in the seventh when a 1-out RBI-single by
Cole Kleckner against junior
Francisco Hernandez (2-2) made the score 5-4.
Cameron Dayton added an RBI-double in the eighth to make the score 6-4.
Hernandez struck out four in 3.2 innings of relief.
Jarek Woodward (1-2) pitched 3.0 scoreless innings of relief for the win.
Mateo Zeppieri hit a 2-out RBI double against to give the Redhawks a 1-0 lead in the first.
In the second,
Trevor Antonson hit into a fielder's choice to bring home a run and make the score 2-0.
UTRGV and Seattle U complete this 3-game series on Sunday at 2 p.m. Fans can watch via
