SAN MARCOS – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros baseball team fell, 12-6, to the Texas State Bobcats Tuesday at Bobcat Ballpark.
Texas State (15-10, 4-2 Sun Belt Conference) jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the bottom of the first. The Bobcats drew five consecutive free tickets to first behind four walks and a hit batter. A pair of bases-loaded wild pitches added to the damage.
UTRGV (12-11, 2-4 Western Athletic Conference) came back to start the second with back-to-back singles from senior
Adrian Torres and junior
Isaac Lopez, but no runs came across. The Bobcats extended their lead to 7-0 in the home half of the frame after
Aaron Lugo singled and advanced to third and home off wild pitches.
Texas State scored four in the third to make it 11-0. A pair of walks and a hit batter loaded the bases for
Alec Patino, who doubled into the gap in left to drive in two.
Daylan Pena sent another double off the left-center wall to drive in two more.
Redshirt senior
Alex Havlicek came out of the bullpen and worked a three-up, three-down fourth for the Vaqueros. UTRGV took that momentum to the top of the fifth and used four knocks in a row to cut into the Bobcats' lead.
Lopez and redshirt freshman
Armani Raygoza both singled, then graduate student
CJ Valdez followed suit. Lopez showed his speed and used a great slide to beat the throw at home after Valdez's single to left to score the first run. Junior
Hank Warren ripped a double to left, making it 11-2 and forcing a pitching change. After a pair of walks, including an RBI free pass to redshirt junior
Erick Martinez, Texas State went back to the bullpen. Junior
Martin Vazquez hit into a double play with the bases loaded but notched an RBI before the frame ended at 11-4.
Redshirt junior
Tyler Davis took the mound and pitched well to keep UTRGV in the game. He stranded two runners in scoring position in the fifth, then sat the Bobcats down in order in the sixth.
The Vaqueros loaded the bases in the top of seventh after back-to-back two-out walks. Texas State went to the bullpen, but pitcher
Rhett McCaffety struggled too, hitting the first two batters he faced to score two. UTRGV trailed 11-6 at the stretch but the Bobcats got one back in the bottom of the seventh off a sacrifice fly from Patino.
Warren finished 3-for-4 with one RBI, one run scored and one double to lead UTRGV offensively. Lopez and Raygoza had two hits each. Starting pitcher
Wyatt Wiatrek took the loss after allowing five runs on one hit with four walks in 0.1 innings of work. The Vaqueros used eight pitchers in the midweek contest.
Otto Wofford got the win for Texas State, pitching one scoreless and hitless inning. Starter
Tony Robie went four innings, allowing four runs on six hits with four strikeouts and one hit batter. The Bobcats also used eight arms in the game.
UTRGV outhit Texas State, 10-7, but issued 12 walks. The Vaqueros will play a WAC series at Utah Tech starting Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
