ST. GEORGE, Utah – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros baseball team fell to the Utah Tech Trailblazers 12-5 on Saturday at Bruce Hurst Field.
Graduate student
CJ Valdez led the Vaqueros (14-12, 4-5 WAC) offensively by going 2-for-3 with a walk, a double, two RBI and a run scored. Junior Sharyland alum
Martin Vazquez went a career-high tying 3-for-5 with a home run and a double. Junior Vela alum
Isaac Lopez finished 2-for-3 with a double, a walk and a run scored. Junior
Steven Lanciawent 2-for-4 with a walk and a run scored.
Valdez drove-in the game's first run with a 2-out double in the second. Then, with a runner at second and one out in the fourth, Valdez drove-in the game's second run with a single. After a Lopez double put runners at second and third, junior
Erick Martinez hit an RBI-single and senior
Kade York laid down a squeeze to bring home a run and put the Vaqueros up 4-0.
The Trailblazers (8-19, 6-6 WAC) got on the board in the bottom of the fourth on a 2-run home run by
Chase Rodrigue zand a solo shot by
Blake Borgogno.
In the fifth, Vazquez hit his eighth home run of the season to put the Vaqueros up 5-3.
Hank Dodson answered with a home run in the sixth to make the score 5-4.
That's where the score stood until the eighth, when the Trailblazers put runners on the corners with one out against junior
Anthony Tejada (1-1).
Ethan Royal and
Kyle McDaniel hit back-to-back RBI-singles to give the Trailblazers their first lead. After a walk loaded the bases,
Aaron Perez, hit a 2-run double and then
Hunter Katschke scored on a wild pitch. Dodson followed with a 2-run home run. Then, with a runner on and two outs, Borgogno hit an RBI-triple to cap the 8-run inning with the score 12-5.
That made a winner of
Aaron Morris (1-0), who struck out one in a scoreless eighth.
Senior
Zach Tjelmeland started for the Vaqueros and struck out seven while allowing four runs on seven hits and two walks in 5.0 innings.
UTRGV opens a 3-game series against UT Arlington on Friday at 6:30 p.m. at UTRGV Baseball Stadium. It's superhero night. Fans wearing a superhero costume or shirt receive free general admission. The game also features the Cane's Challenge. If the Vaqueros win, all fans in the stadium will receive coupons for buy one, get one free box combos at Raising Cane's on their way out. Additionally, UTRGV Athletics will honor the men's golf seniors on the field during the game.
