RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's tennis team was defeated, 5-2, Saturday by the UT Arlington (UTA) Mavericks in a Western Athletic Conference (WAC) match at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
The Mavericks (12-6, 2-2 WAC) took the doubles point with wins on all three courts. UTRGV (8-10, 0-4 WAC) evened the match at 1-1 after a retirement due to injury on singles Court Three gave graduate student
Isabelle Bahr the win.
UT Arlington took the first sets on all six courts and went on to clinch the victory with straight-set wins in the sixth, second and fourth flights.
Junior
Marjorie Souza once again displayed her grit and athleticism in another competitive No. 1 match. After dropping the first set, 6-1, to
Tara Gorinsek, Souza came back strong in a back-and-forth second set. She pushed the frame to a tiebreaker and went on to win, 7-6 (7:3). Souza opened up a 2-0 lead in the deciding third frame, and when the team victory was secured on Court Four, Gorinsek retired to give Souza the win.
The Mavericks added another win in a tight three-set match in the fifth flight despite good fight from junior
Kristal Dule.
Up next for the Vaqueros is a 4 p.m. (CT) WAC match Friday at Seattle U.
